Earlier in the day the squad was received by King Juan Carlos and met with Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero. The Spanish side returned home to a jubilant nation and a huge fiesta on Monday after beating the Netherlands 1-0 after extra time in the World Cup final in Johannesburg on Sunday. Crowds overflowed into the street and surrounded the team bus during the parade with fans, virtually all sporting the red and yellow national colours, lining the five-kilometre (three-mile) route as the bus crawled through the crowd with the players waving and raising the gold World Cup trophy into the air. As the parade snaked down the Gran Via in the heart of Madrid, Spanish air force fighter jets flew overhead spewing out the colours of the national flag. The parade was expected to last well into the night Monday.
