Temwani Chilenga is more than a Primary School Teacher, she is a philanthropist. She teaches in Standard 3 at Chambu Primary School in Area 25, Lilongwe. Touched by the plight of her students, she decided to start supporting them with food, clothes and school materials – from her salary. When the need grew bigger she started fundraising among her family and friends, she was lucky to get connected with fellow teachers in Australia and United States of America who also fundraised on her behalf. Temwani Chilenga says her project has now reached out to 2,000 people which include school learners and the aged from villages such as Chambu, Ndodani, Malegera and Mzondo, all in area of traditional authority Chitukula in Lilongwe district. With donor support, 200 learners from the poor communities have been supported with school uniforms, a development which has addressed poverty, absenteeism and enjoyment amongst them. She says the project has encouraged learners who dropped out of school to go back to school hastening to add the support is not enough to carter for all in the said schools.
